So are superhero movies dying or not?

Steven Spielberg, aka one of our greatest living directors, said last week that the current blockbuster behemoths would “go the way of the Western,” which is code for “become culturally irrelevant and box office flops.”

But current superhero movie director Zack Snyder, who directed Watchmen and Man of Steel and has a tiny movie called Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice coming out next year, has something to say about that. When asked by Yahoo about Spielberg’s comments, Snyder responded:

“He might not be wrong. I think it puts more pressure on us, the filmmakers, to not just crank out superhero movies for the sake of it. To me, the one thing I love working in the DC universe is that Superman and Batman and Wonder Woman are American mythology. It’s not about making a superhero, it’s a mythological universe that we live in. That I hope stands the test of time.”

Although he admitted, you can’t predict the future:

“That’s hopefully the sort of magic bullet. But who knows what audiences will want in the future.”

It’s OK because if audiences don’t want superhero movies in the future, Superman can just turn back time, right? Right?

But seriously, what do you think?
